Spirit of the Church: A Celebration of Black Gospel Music, Volume 1
Unlike any other music, gospel is a life celebration inspiring spiritual zeal with fervent harmony that urges listeners enthusiastically to their feet. Once limited to an oral tradition among African-Americans unable to read and later to the rich cultural history of Black churches, today this soul-stirring music has transcended barriers, embraced by American mainstream and capturing creative and spiritual imaginations around the world. No other program, film or single album captured the heart of the Golden Age of Gospel as did TV Gospel Time (1962-65). Airing Sunday mornings on NBC, this Chicago-based show merged song and God's word, attracting a primarily African American audience and sponsors, but introducing the genre to a broader audience.
